A farewell letter to my hip...

You and I have been together since the very beginning.  Now, you were not like the others – you were a little off kilter, but that was OK because so was I!

They tried so hard to fix you – surgery, implants, traction and casts – and you did the best you could.  I was always aware of you and careful about how I treated you but you always met the challenge.  Together you and I had an excellent life.  We played in the tree tops and balanced on rocks in the rivers.  As we grew older we experienced love and passion and then – miracle of all miracles – we even managed to give birth to two amazingly perfect baby boys.

And then, as they grew, again we played in the tree tops and hiked in the woods of Narnia.  Together, you and I have lived a wonderful, active life.

You made it forty years, my friend, before your imperfections finally lead you to start to deteriorate.  You did your best, and you owe me nothing.

And finally, it is time for us to say good bye.  In a few short days the surgeon will carefully expose you to the outside air and lift you from my body – a moment of final farewell.

You will then be replaced by metal and screws, a ball and a joint will take your place.  It will take some time, I understand, to get used to those foreign objects being under my skin but over time, I hope, I will once again be able to hike in the woods of Narnia, climb a tree and even play a round of golf.
So my friend, this is good bye.  Thank you for the life you let me lead – you did your best and for that, I thank you.
